School Holiday Activities Pune: A 14-Day Low-Cost Holiday Survival Kit for Parents

By Site Administrator

School holidays sound exciting when they begin.

“No school! No homework! No early mornings!”

But after a few days, many parents hear a very different sentence:

“Mummy, I’m bored…” 😅

And then the cycle begins—YouTube, gaming, mobile phones, snacks, sleeping late, and another round of “What should I do now?”

If you’re looking for school holiday activities in Pune that are affordable, meaningful and actually enjoyable for children, you don’t need to fill every day with expensive classes or outings.

Sometimes, the best holiday experiences are surprisingly simple.

The real goal of a holiday is not to keep your child busy every minute. It is to give them opportunities to explore, create, move, think, communicate and discover themselves.

So here is a simple 14-Day School Holiday Survival Kit for Pune Parents.

Day 1: Let Your Child Plan the Holiday

Instead of deciding everything for your child, give them a small challenge:

“You have ₹500. How would you plan one fun day for the family?”

Let them think about food, travel, activities and expenses.

This simple activity teaches:

🧠 Decision-making
💰 Basic money management
🎯 Planning
💬 Communication

Don’t immediately correct their choices. Ask questions and let them think.

Day 2: Explore Pune on Foot

You don’t always need an expensive outing.

Choose a nearby garden, heritage area or safe walking route and turn it into a discovery walk.

Ask your child to notice:

  • Five different plants
  • Three interesting buildings
  • Different sounds
  • Interesting signs or shop names
  • Something they have never noticed before

The activity becomes much more interesting when you stop saying “Look at this” and start asking:

“What did YOU notice?”

Day 3: The No-Mobile Challenge

Don’t announce a dramatic “digital detox” for the entire holiday.

Start small.

Pick 2–3 hours without phones, gaming or television.

Then give your child something interesting to replace the screen:

🎨 Drawing
🧩 Puzzles
📚 Reading
🏸 Outdoor play
🎲 Board games

The lesson isn’t “mobile phones are bad.”

It is:

“I can enjoy myself without a screen.”

Day 4: Cook Something Together

Choose one simple recipe and let your child participate.

They can:

  • Measure ingredients
  • Read instructions
  • Calculate quantities
  • Help prepare the dish
  • Present it to the family

Don’t worry if the kitchen becomes messy.

The mess can be cleaned.

The confidence your child gains from saying “I made this!” is much more valuable.

Day 5: Create a “My Pune” Project

Give your child a notebook and ask them to create:

“My Pune – The City Through My Eyes”

They can include:

  • Favourite places
  • Favourite food
  • Things they like about Pune
  • Places they want to explore
  • A drawing/map of Pune
  • One thing they would improve about the city

Older children can turn it into a small presentation.

This combines creativity, research and communication.

Day 6: Give Them a Real Responsibility

Here’s an activity that costs ₹0.

Give your child one genuine responsibility for the day.

For example:

  • Organising their study table
  • Planning dinner
  • Managing their school bag
  • Watering plants
  • Helping with grocery planning

Don’t call it a “task.”

Call it their responsibility.

Children develop independence when parents gradually allow them to do things for themselves.

Day 7: Family Game Night

Bring everyone together for one evening.

No phones.

No television.

Choose:

🎲 Board games
🃏 Cards
🧠 Puzzles
🎭 Dumb charades
✏️ Quiz games

But add one rule:

Parents play too.

Children don’t need perfect parents.

They need parents who are willing to sit down, laugh and spend time with them.

Day 8: Visit a Library or Book Corner

A holiday is a wonderful time to help children rediscover reading.

Don’t force them to pick a “useful” book.

Let them explore.

Comics, fiction, biographies, science books, mythology, sports or even books about hobbies can become gateways to reading.

Ask:

“Which book would you choose if nobody told you what to read?”

Their answer can tell you a lot about their interests.

Day 9: Start a Mini Home Garden

You don’t need a large balcony or garden.

A few containers, soil and seeds are enough.

Let your child:

🌱 Plant something
💧 Water it
📅 Track its growth
📝 Maintain a simple observation diary

This teaches patience—something that the instant-gratification world often doesn’t.

Day 10: The ₹100 Creativity Challenge

Give your child ₹100.

The challenge:

Create something useful or beautiful with it.

They might buy:

  • Craft material
  • Seeds
  • Stationery
  • Recycled-art supplies

Or perhaps they will spend nothing and use things already available at home.

Don’t judge the result.

Ask them to explain why they chose their idea.

That’s where the real learning happens.

Day 11: Interview a Family Member

Ask your child to interview a parent, grandparent, uncle, aunt or another family member.

Questions could include:

  • What were you like at my age?
  • What did you enjoy doing?
  • What was your first job?
  • What mistake taught you something important?
  • What advice would you give me?

This can become a beautiful family memory—and a lesson in listening.

Day 12: Try Something Your Child Has Never Tried

This is one of my favourite holiday activities.

Don’t decide based only on what your child is already good at.

Let them experiment.

Maybe:

🎵 Music
🎨 Art
🏸 A new sport
📸 Photography
🧑‍🍳 Cooking
🌱 Gardening
🎤 Storytelling
🧩 Puzzles

The purpose isn’t to discover a career in one day.

It is simply to discover curiosity.

Day 13: “Teach Me Something” Day

Turn the tables.

Tell your child:

“Today, YOU are the teacher.”

They can teach you anything they know:

  • A game
  • A drawing technique
  • A cricket skill
  • A dance step
  • Something from science
  • Something they learned online

Watch how their confidence changes when they become the expert.

Day 14: The Most Important Activity – Talk

Keep aside 30 minutes.

No phones.

No lectures.

No corrections.

Just conversation.

Ask:

“What did you enjoy most during these holidays?”

Then ask:

“What would you like to learn next?”

And finally:

“Is there anything you wish I understood better about you?”

Don’t interrupt.

Sometimes, the most valuable parenting activity doesn’t require money, travel or planning.

It requires listening.

The Bigger Lesson Behind These 14 Days

Bigger Lesson

Notice something about this list.

We haven’t tried to make your child’s holiday a second school.

There are no worksheets for every morning.

No pressure to complete 10 activities every week.

The purpose is different.

A good holiday gives children opportunities to develop things that marks alone cannot measure:

Curiosity. Confidence. Creativity. Communication. Independence. Decision-making.

And this brings us to something I often discuss with parents during counselling.

Your Child Is More Than Their Marks

Two children can sit in the same classroom, receive the same teacher and study the same textbook—and still learn completely differently.

One may love discussion.

Another may prefer visual information.

One may naturally take leadership.

Another may express themselves through creativity.

One may enjoy solving problems.

Another may learn best through hands-on experiences.

As parents, the better we understand these individual differences, the better we can support our children.

This is where a professionally interpreted DMIT assessment and parenting consultation can provide another perspective on your child’s strengths, learning preferences and behavioural tendencies.

It shouldn’t be treated as a magic answer or a prediction of your child’s future.

Instead, think of it as one more tool to help you understand your child better.
